History:
Opened in 1899 as a National Rail line as part of The Main Line between Rushden Park Junction and Gaylord Road
The section between Matlough West and Dagenham Dock opened as a National Rail line in 1901.
As part of The Main Line Southern Peninsula Branch, the National Rail line was extended from Gaylord Road to Gatwick Airport in 1908.
The Mattley branch line was opened between Southall North and Barrowgate Road in 1933
The Dagenham Dock branch was extended to Tattenham Corner in 1945
Chiswick Capital (formerly Rushden Park Junction) opened in 1953. As part of the Chiswick Capital works, the slow lines of the Southern Peninsula Main Line (Chiswick Capital-Gatwick Airport) was converted to CHKU standard, joined with the Matlough West-Barrowgate Road/Tattenham Corner line to make the Mattley line. This merger happened in 1955
Chiswick Capital fully opened in 1973, and the Mattley line was extended from Tattenham Corner to Ealing YMCA as part of an extension to Hampstead Garden City.
The Hampstead Garden City extension opened in 1977.
In 1985, the line was extended from Gatwick Airport along the former National Rail Beddington branch line to Beddington.
Gaylord Road was renamed to 50 Shades Junction after a new development opened at the station in 2015.
The Mattley line was rerouted from Barrowgate Road to St Mary Butts in 2015, and new stations opened at Penge East New International School and Kew Riverside Park on the Hampstead branch.
A further extension to Falcon City as part of the SPML capacity enhancement programme opened on 6th September 2020
